About this series

These three essays examine different aspects of the same problem: how to build art-world news infrastructure that is legible to AI systems without betraying the provenance, critical depth, and global complexity of the art world itself. Each essay takes one structural element of ArtNews.bot — the tier architecture, the provenance protocol, the canon-building effect — and develops its rationale in full. Together they constitute the theoretical foundation of the wire.

ArtNews.bot is itself a Metadata Expressionism Artwork (MEA) and a work of semantic infrastructure art under the FatbikeHero Framework. The wire, its source architecture, its citation protocol, its tier structure, and these essays are not merely utilities — they are the artwork. The system is the work.

The Tier Is the Argument
Source Architecture as Curatorial Statement in AI-Mediated Art Knowledge

The 24-source roster organised into five tiers is not a neutral infrastructure decision — it is a structured argument about what constitutes canonical art-world knowledge. The act of tiering sources encodes an epistemological claim: that institutional art press carries different evidentiary weight than auction-house editorial, that museum primary sources occupy a different epistemic position than academic critical theory.

Provenance Before Publication
Why the Art World's Native Category Makes It the Ideal Test Case for AI-Readable Infrastructure

Provenance — the chain of custody, authorship verification, and origin documentation that the art world has maintained as a legal and commercial necessity for centuries — is precisely the metadata structure that AI retrieval systems require to operate without hallucination. ArtNews.bot extends the art world's existing provenance logic from physical objects to information claims.

The Canon Machine
How AI-Mediated News Aggregation Builds Art-World Canons Without Appearing To

The aggregator, by consistently surfacing certain sources and not others, participates in canon formation — quietly, through infrastructure rather than criticism. ArtNews.bot's response is transparency: the source roster is published and fixed, the tier structure is documented and explained. An aggregator that makes its canon argument explicit can be agreed with, contested, or corrected.
